Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte vows to end online gambling

On Thursday the 22nd of December, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte announced that he will put an end to online gambling.

“I am ordering the closure of all online gaming (companies). All of them.” said President Duterte while presenting a budget for 2017.

However, this does not come as a big surprise, since Duterte announced that he will be taking a stance against online gambling in August 2016, when he said; “I will restore online (gambling) provided taxes are correctly collected and they are situated or placed in districts where gambling is allowed, which means to say, not within the church distance or schools.” He also said; “I was mad because even the youth are gambling and there was no way of collecting the proper taxes.”

The Philippines stands to lose approximately 10 billion pesos ($215 million) in annual revenues by not renewing the licenses of online gambling sites that are operating in its jurisdiction.

“Pay the correct taxes. Gamble until you die. I do not really care.” said Duterte.

No more court-side William Hill gambling ads at the Australian Open

In October 2015, bookmaker William Hill became the first betting partner of the Australian Open. William Hill had apparently paid a cool $5 million to sponsor the Australian Open. During the 2016 Australian Open, the sport of Tennis became embroiled in a number of damaging match-fixing allegations. Although William Hill was not implicated in any of the match-fixing allegations, Australia Open officials were criticized for promoting the bookmaker during that damaging period. On the up-side, while William Hill will not have any court-side presence during the 2017 Australia Open, William Hill remains an official sponsor of the Australia Open. “Ultimately I want to see an end to all gambling sponsorship at sporting events because so many children are exposed to it.” said Australian Senator Nick Xenophon

Recreational marijuana use is legalized in Nevada, but not in the casinos

Beginning on the 1st of January. 2017, thanks to the Nevada Marijuana Legalization Initiative, also known as Question 2, it will become legal for persons aged 21 years and over to possess and smoke up to one ounce of marijuana for recreational purposes. Adults will be allowed to purchase pot from “licensed retail marijuana stores”, and those who do not reside within 25 miles or 40 kilometers of a marijuana store will be allowed grow up to 6 marijuana plants in an enclosed locked area. Furthermore, persons wishing to consume marijuana will only be allowed to smoke it indoors and not in public areas, and there will be no crossing over state lines with it.

While the passing of Question 2 has legalized marijuana for personal use, the Nevada Gaming Control Board will not be allowing anyone to smoke pot in the casinos or hotels because marijuana possession is still a federal felony. In fact, the Nevada Gaming Control Board has told its license holders to have nothing to do with the state’s legalization of the marijuana trade. “Were we to take a position that would allow a federal law to be broken and not act on it, that has a great chance of inviting federal intervention,” said Commissioner Randolph Townsend.
